Forest Hill House

A single storey rear extension to a three storey detached house in Forest Hill.

Since the clients bought this house, they have extended into the attic, renovated the first floor and altered the front entrance and reception room.  The last piece of the puzzle is the kitchen and living room facing the garden.  The brief was to provide a new kitchen, utility room and ground floor WC in the position of the existing ground floor kitchen.  The proposed extension would increase the kitchen footprint and enhance the connection from kitchen to garden.

The scheme consists of a group of new flat roofed volumes which push out into the garden.   Brick walls and aluminium framed windows echoing the existing materials.  Stepped brick detailing at the new windows give a texture to the extension volumes.

The kitchen is set deep in the plan with a new WC accessed from the hall and a pantry off the kitchen at the back of the space.  A utility room is placed in the old lean to on the side elevation.

The dining space is located in the extension to take in views of the garden through the wide bi-fold window.  Floor to ceiling sliding doors are set at an angle with an external overhang sheltering the approach from the garden.   The wall between kitchen and living space is eroded to provide a visual connection between the two spaces.  A new bay window in the living room provides a space to sit and take in views of the garden outside.

Planning permission was granted in September 2022.
